Confusion has rocked pre-referendum signature collection by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) in Nakuru as the only ODM legislator in the county is opposing the exercise.

Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama has continuously opposed the exercise, saying the country needs time for development.

Last week, ODM held an MPs' meeting and resolved to have all legislators spearhead the exercise in their respective areas. But Arama has distanced himself from the push and the exercise now risks hitting a dead end.

Arama has been pressurised by ODM leaders in the county to resign but has hit out at his critics, saying he will support the Jubilee coalition for the sake of development.

“It is my right as the people’s representative to give my opinions because I will oppose the referendum and work with Jubilee government to achieve developments for my constituents,” Arama said.

Meanwhile, leader of minority in the Nakuru County assembly Daniel Ambale has termed dishonest the governors’ push for a referendum.

Ambale said the ‘Pesa Mashinani’ campaign by the governors will not help address the main challenges the country is facing.

“The calls by the governors’ council to hold a referendum are not genuine because they are only after money from the national government,” he said.

He, however, noted that similar calls by Cord are timely since there are numerous things that are not going the right way.

The leader of minority urged Kenyans not to be so quick to dismiss the Opposition in its call for a referendum, saying they have a right to raise their dissenting opinion.

He challenged governors to drop their push for a referendum and join forces with the Cord coalition.
