Conservationists around Lake Naivasha have raised an alarm over the death of hippos around the lake in the last couple of months.
The conservationists say that about 20 hippos have allegedly been found dead around the lake in the last few months with the cause of death not known.
Speaking to the journalists Tuesday afternoon at Lake Naivasha, the chairman of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association, David Kilo, said the cause of the hippos’ death has remained a mystery.
“We do not know the cause of the deaths. We have called experts from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and they too have not been able to tell us what is killing them. In the last few months, we have seen a number of dead hippos around the lake and each and every time we call KWS, they fail to act,” Kilo said.
Kilo who is also an eco tourism operator around the lake further noted that the riparian land and also the corridors around the lake have been fenced using the electric fences.
“We think this fence has contributed to the death of hippos. About a month ago, two hippos were electrocuted as they were trying to cross the fence to go on the other side to seek for greener pastures,” Kilo said.
