[Photo/nation.co.ke]A conspiracy to shield certain plastic bag manufacturers from the plastic bag ban has been blown to the surface by an agency that specialises in environment-related complaints.According to the National Environmental Committee, the underground manufacturers were mainly based in Mlolongo, Thika, and Nairobi industrial area.''These bags are sold in backstreet markets. Those in the business are shielded by powerful state officials.'' John Chumo who is the secretary of the committee said.This is happening despite a ban on plastic bags that came into effect on August 28 despite the huge public outcry.The National Environment Management Authority it is carrying out investigations to identify the illegal manufacturers and have them face the full force of the law.Experts have warned that penalties may not prevent manufacturers from manufacturing the bags as they are making huge profits from their sale.
