Yash Pal Ghai has joined the conversation of Raila Odinga swearing himself in as the people’s president.
The constitutional lawyer has said if Odinga takes the step, he will protect his legacy and become the ‘Father of the Nation’.
The lawyer, who was part of the team that drew up the country’s constitution, wrote on an opinion piece on a local daily.
“Raila’s frustration is understandable. And yet I feel that he should abandon his determination to be anointed as President," Yash said as quoted by the Star.
“But I have a positive reason for Raila’s abandoning the idea of the presidency. It is to find a role outside the structures of the state, in order to reshape Kenya," he said.
“We should proclaim him as Baba wa Taifa (Father of the Nation), accepted even by those who are not his ardent supporters,”
Odinga has maintained that nothing will stop him from swearing himself in as the president after he insisted he will not recognize President Kenyatta’s win.
The opposition leader withdrew from the October 26 polls, saying the playing ground was not level for the election.
This came after the nullification of the August 8 elections, in which Kenyatta was again declared the winner.
Raila and his NASA team shelved plans to swear him in, but the plan seems to be picking momentum in the last few days.
