Kisumu international Airport has received a major boost after a Chinese firm, Weiye Luofei Ltd, expressed interest in constructing Sh1.2 billion fish processing plant near Lake Victoria that will use the airport as the exit of its produce to international market.
In a deal signed between the firm and Kisumu County government, Weiye Luofei Ltd will construct a fish processing factory with a processing capacity of 300 tonnes of Tilapia monthly.
The firm will also establish fish farms in the region by converting 100 acres of Lake Victoria at the Korando Peninsular into a fish farms that will be managed by specific chosen farmers.
The new establishment will help revive kisumu international airport that has been performing poorly despite the efforts by Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) in putting up necessary infrastructure to handle huge cargo freights.
According to the Airport Manager Joseph Okumu, fuel depot and cargo aprons were completed two years ago and this elevated the status of the airport to a pivotal transport facility.
Kisumu Governor's investment adviser Victor Nyagaya has also expressed hopes on the project saying that it will help to create 500 jobs upon its completion as it will also be slowly be employing more people annually to over 1,000.
Construction of the project is set to commence early 2018 .
