Construction of a key road linking Mombasa Island and the Miritini Standard Gauge Railway line (SGR) station will begin in two months’ time.
Construction works will start after the rail project commences operations, SGR consultant engineer James Karanja said on Thursday.
The investment is expected to ease access to the Miritini SGR terminus from Mombasa Island and vice versa.
“By the time we complete the railway line infrastructure which is coming in less than two months, there would be road connectivity through Magongo and Changamwe to the Island,” Karanja said.
“The railway will not work in total isolation. It will work with the road network,” he added.
He said the road will also connect to adjacent areas adding that there were plans to expand the network to the Moi International Airport.
“We needed space without being hindered,” Karanja said.
“We had a location in Changamwe, but we did not want to interfere with the flight path of planes coming to land at Moi Airport. Then it meant we had to dig down the track where we found an oil pipeline. Our objective was the port, that’s why we went for Miritini," he added, as quoted by Business daily.
