Construction of the Sh6 billion Eldoret Southern bypass in Uasin Gishu County is expected to start this month.

Governor Jackson Mandago said the construction is aimed at decongesting Eldoret town and to improve road transport.

The project which is estimated to cost Sh6 billion will be financed by the African Development Bank.

Speaking on Monday, Mandago who said contractors were already on site to begin the groundwork added that the project will ease the hectic traffic jams that characterize the Eldoret Central Business District once complete.

He also said that the county government has bought its own equipment that will be used in maintaining and constructing new roads.

“This has been one long-awaited project by the people of this region and we are happy that work is about to commence and soon we will decongest Eldoret Town.”

“Walkways for pedestrians have been set aside along all key highways and motorists and riders should not be found using these walkways,” said Mandago.

The governor further said that business people who have set up temporary structures on the road reserves will be evicted as the government had given them enough time to vacate.

“Early notices have been given to the people who sit in the reserved space for road construction and they should not ignore them because my administration is going to act,” he added.

The road project that was launched by President Kenyatta last year will run from the Eldoret-Nairobi Road through Eldoret International Airport.
