A Kiambu County based contractor has raised alarm over what he has said is extortion of contractors being being awarded projects.

Tractorden (K) Limited, a contractor who is working on Githurai Railway station claimed that a group by the name 'Business Community' is demanding Sh15 million protection fees.

Tractorden official who declined to be named for fear of reprisal, said the so-called Business Community has been demanding the bribe for them to continue working on the project.

“We are calling on the government to offer security o our workers working at the Githurai Railway because the so-called business community has been giving threats that they will bar us from accessing the site until we give the Sh15 million bribe claiming to be protection fee,” said the official. 

The official added that the business community is being sponsored by local politicians interested in making money through the backdoor.

"Local politicians are the ones sponsoring the business community to intimidate and harass firms undertaking projects in Kiambu County. The government should do something urgently before the situation gets out of hand,” noted the official. 

The official claimed that the business community has been purporting to be close to Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu

The official was speaking at the construction site in Githurai on Sunday.
