Controller of Budget Agnes Odhiambo says the huge wage bill in Mombasa County is likely to result in unsustainable salary costs.
Mombasa County spent close to Sh4 billion to pay workers’ salaries as per the Annual Implementation Report for the financial year 2014/2015.
Despite decreasing of county’s expenditure on personal emoluments from Sh4.04. billion to Sh3.99 billion, Odhiambo cautioned officials that the huge wage bill was likely to affect the economy of the coastal county.
She called upon the county government to comply with personal emoluments ceiling set at 35 percent as per the law.
“The County Public Service Board should establish an optimal staffing structure in order to manage the wage bill,” read part of the report, as quoted by The Daily Nation.
The Annual Implementation Report further indicates that Kilifi County had spend Sh2.48 billion to pay workers which translates to increase of 40.2 percent compared to Sh1.77 billion in 2014/2015 financial year.
The increase of wage bill in Kilifi County was attributed to growing task force in the region.
Taita Taveta County spent Sh1.76 billion on personal emoluments while Kwale County used Sh1.55 billion on salaries.
