An outspoken blogger has hit out at the opposition for failing to mobilise their supporters to register in the just concluded voter registration exercise.
Gordon Opiyo said it was impossible for the opposition to oust President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto since it had failed had to amass the required numbers in the just concluded exercise.
He said the fewer number of people who had registered in critical NASA zones was a clear sign of voter apathy in opposition strongholds.
“NASA had its hopes dashed when Vihiga, Kakamega and Bungoma refused to take votes. Siaya, Kisumu performed very poorly,” he said in a Facebook post. Opiyo called on the opposition to focus on the 2022 race saying 2017 was a done deal.
In January 2017, while on a mass voter registration drive in Kakamega County, CORD leader Raila Odinga announced that the winner of the August 8 presidential race will be known at the end of the mass voter registration.
Statistics from the IEBC supervised exercise show that the NASA zones trail the Jubilee Party’s. This revelation comes after the registration exercise ended on Sunday, February 19, after a four-day deadline extension.
The numbers show that Vihiga registered only 28 percent of the targeted number while only 45 percent registered in Busia. Also, only 39.3 percent of the targeted voters registered in Kakamega while Bungoma managed 44 percent.
On the other hand, Jubilee Party zones posted impressive numbers with Kiambu County leading the pack with 220,000 new voters (88.19 percent) with Nyeri being the worst performer at 42 percent of the target number.
The numbers show Kiambu county’s numbers beat Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia counties combined.
