A convict serving a 10-year jail term has petitioned officer in charge of Kericho GK main prisons to reveal information of allegations of his torture inside the prison cells.
The convict, Hillary Rono, and Kericho Center for Human Rights and Reconciliation (KCHRR) want Hassan Wafula to disclose the number of days the prisoner was isolated, locked and allegedly tortured inside prison cells.
Rono and KCHRR executive director Ronald Ngeno want the High Court in Nakuru to issue orders compelling Wafula to explain the circumstances surrounding the secret transfer of the convict to Nakuru GK prisons after the family raised concern over the allegations of torture. The family of the convict from Sotik has expressed fear that their kin is being tortured after allegations emerged that he had been isolated and locked up inside the prison cells.
It is averred in the petition currently placed at a Nakuru court that Bernard Rono, a brother to the convict, was denied a chance to see him during a visit to the Kericho main prison.
It is alleged that Kiprotich later learned from an officer in the prison that his brother had been isolated, and locked up in cell where he was being tortured. Ngeno also claimed that on July 18 he visited the prison where he met two welfare officers and upon conveying the allegations, he was directed to meet Wafula, who then became hostile, rude and threatened to bar him and his team from entering the facility.
The petitioners now want the convict transferred back to Kericho where the alleged torture took place to facilitate proper interrogation that will assist in getting down to the bottom of the matter. The High Court is expected to give direction in the case next week.
