Majengo market in Vihiga county was the stage for running battles between police and residents on Saturday where a number from both parties sustained injuries.
The chase saw Vihiga deputy OCS and two junior officers injured in their attempts to disperse protesters at the market.
Several other civilians were also injured, one critically so after being run over by a police van.
Another demonstrator sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to Mukumu Hospital for treatment.
According to the Star, the bad blood began when a group discovered marked ballot papers in two cars belonging to a local Majengo trader.
Reports say the youths were washing the cars at the time of discovery.
They then alerted Central Maragoli MCA Evans Chunguli who then led them in the demonstrations.
Later, officers intervened and tried to disperse the group which had now barricaded a section of the Kisumu-Kakamega road.
The officers are said to have been injured by their colleagues because they were in plain clothes.
