Addressing a press conference in Nairobi on Tuesday, Cord leaders led by Senators James Orengo (Siaya) and Johnston Muthama (Machakos) said the opposition is aware of the move.

"We are aware that the Secretariat and some of the retired commissioners have been holding informal meetings with the Deputy President and the Cabinet Secretary responsible for ICT to block the full and comprehensive implementation of the Election Laws Amendment Act of 2016 including exerting inappropriate influence on the nomination of the new Commissioners," Orengo said.

He said Kenyans want electoral reforms to be done and wound up quickly as the country heads towards the 2017 elections.

Mid-year, Cord led a series of demonstrations in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii and Nyamira to force IEBC Commissioners vacate office.

The coalition accuses IEBC Chairman Isaac Hassan and his team of conducting a fraudulent poll in 2013 which cost ODM party leader Raila Odinga the Presidency.

Cord has vowed to ensure the IEBC as currently constituted does not oversee the 2017 elections.

"We will not accept the use of Parliament to pass policies whose discussions took place outside Parliament," Muthama said on his part.

"If there is any clause that needs to be amended or to be debated on there is room to do that, but only if the interim Committee that was appointed to do this work is involved."
