Airing his views on Facebook, Mr Macharia said the current trend was likely to lead to a tribal-based chaos which should never be allowed to happen.

"These demonstrations have now taken a completely different angle and are clear reminiscence of 2007/8 chaos and tribal based hatred."

Analysing the incidences of Monday where specific groups appeared to have been targeted in the looting by demonstrators, Macharia affirmed his view that the country was now plunging into an ethnic conflict.

"The use of crude weapons in Nairobi and the targeting of business perceived to belong to a certain community in Kisumu are clear indicators of the violence and ethnic dimension of the demonstrations. I think it's time for the government to stop them once and for all," he added.

The demonstrations by the opposition coalition on Monday left two people dead and several others injured while property was vandalised in Kisumu and Nairobi .
