The ruling Jubilee coalition and Opposition Cord have finally agreed on the date of the next general election.
The two political players have settled on August 8, 2017.
However, discussions on electoral reforms, particularly the proposed removal of incumbent IEBC commissioners are still ongoing.
In a Thursday meeting, Cord argued that the Issack Hassan led team conducted 2013 elections so badly that it should not be allowed to handle another.
Jubilee, however, said the allegations against IEBC were baseless.
Another bone of contention is whether there should be a new voters’ register, whether the results of the presidential election declared at polling stations should be final and how the new IEBC should be created.
Cord said announcing of presidential election results at the polling station would address rigging. Jubilee however insisted that IEBC Chairman should be the one to give final results of presidential poll.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria questioned Cord’s position saying, “You come up with a raft of allegations but you don’t want to go to Article 251 of the Constitution (on a tribunal). Do you have what Winston Churchill calls the prerogative of harlots, where you can claim anything without backing it with evidence?”
