Legislators alied to the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) on Thursday accused Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over the ongoing crisis in schools and said that the CS should resign.
Led by Cord co-principal Moses Wetang’ula and Orange DEmocratic Movement (ODM) party chair John Mbadi, the opposition leaders blamed Matiang’i saying that he was mishandling the education sector through making decisions without consultation.
Speaking at parliament buildings, the lawmakers called for closure of all public schools and declaration of the unrest a national disaster.
The legislators backed teachers’ unions in calling for the closing of public schools following the wave of arson attacks bedeviling the schools across the country.
Mombasa senator Omar Hassan and Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo demanded for immediate action to tame the ugly situation in schools.
“We want Matiang’i to resign. How can a school go up in flames immediately after Matiang’i left? Did he do it?” asked Hassan.
Elsewhere, Matiang'i during a crisis meeting on the same day held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development insisted that schools would not be closed.
He called on school principals to ensure everything went as planned in the curriculum schedule until the end of the term on August 12.
