Cord is not holding the country at ransom over the anti IEBC demonstrations but is only pushing for reforms in the IEBC, Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama has said.
Muthama, a key figure in Cord, said Wednesday that the coalition's weekly countrywide protests were being misinterpreted.
Speaking in Nairobi where together with his Siaya counterpart James Orengo officially announced a break to the weekly protests to allow room for dialogue, Muthama exuded confidence in having their voice heard, arguing that the protests had achieved positive results especially after attracting international attention.
Muthama downplayed accusations that Cord was trying to disrespect the constitution by inciting Kenyans against a constitutionality formed body, arguing that theirs was a push for free and fair elections.
"We don't want a coup d'etat as it its being portrayed but rather, it is about pushing for reforms that will ensure free and fair elections come 2017," he added.
"It is the constitutional right of all Kenyans to vote but then, how do you expect a body that has lost it's credibility to hold fair elections? Is it logical?" he posed.
The Machakos Senator noted that Cord will not relent in its efforts of pushing for structured dialogue in solving the stalemate and insisted that if nothing fruitful was reached by June 5, they will be back to the streets come Monday July 6.
Cord has been on the spot over for inciting its supporters to storm IEBC offices countrywide to force the commissioners out of office claiming lack of credibility.
They want new commissioners to be appointed and the commission restructured before the next general election failure to which they have threatened to boycott the elections.
