The coalition said that it rescheduled its date with the electoral body as a way of showing honour and respect to the late, Lucy Kibaki. It explained that its push by close to a week is in compliance with the nationwide three-day mourning to be announced just immediately after the deceased body arrives on Sunday, this week

In a public statement sent on Friday, Cord stated that it had called off to a later day the occupation of the allegedly 'incapable' IEBC offices at its headquarters at Anniversary Towers that was scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, 2016. It, therefore, called on its supporters across the nation to join fellow Kenyans in mourning, Mama Lucy.

On Monday, the opposition led by its co-principals Raila, Kalonzo and Wetangula staged a major demonstration at the Anniversary towers in a bid to eject the commissioners holding offices at the IEBC. However, they were forcefully repulsed by anti-riot police who released teargas on them.
