A Kisii MCA believes that Cord will have a major impact on 2017 presidential elections if they name their flag bearer earlier enough.

The opposition coalition has not named its candidate with all the three principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula expressing interests on the Cord ticket.

But Kiogoro MCA Samuel Apoko believes the strategy could not work given Jubilee have already identified the candidate and it could take long for Cord supporters to ‘throw’ their support behind a late flag bearer.

“I think this is the right time for our principals to name a flag bearer so that we now concentrate on popularising him across the country. Our opponents are already set and they are just waiting for elections,” he said in a telephone interview.

“If we delay, then this could have a side effect in our campaign since it may take longer for our supporters to throw their support behind the choice. Time has come for the coalition to name the candidate so that we concentrate on real campaigns,” he added.

Apoko who was once arrested for allegedly insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta faulted the campaigns done by the three opposition protagonists saying they might disintegrate unity within the coalition.

“When you see the three of them sometimes holding parallel campaigns then it even puts the coalition at a risk of disintegrating. Everyone believes that could be a flag bearer and in the long run, it may even lead to disagreements over who should be the flag bearer. The earlier we do it the better,” he said.
