The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has threatened to hold more anti-IEBC protests in a week if the government fails to hold talks to resolve the IEBC stand-off.
Addressing journalists at Capital Hill in Nairobi on Monday, Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama gave the government a two-week ultimatum to initiate dialogue over the IEBC issue, failure to which they would hold protests every Monday and Thursday.
“We will increase the protests on a gradual basis. Two will be held next week if there is no dialogue by Monday. If President Uhuru Kenyatta remains silent in the next two weeks, the protests will increase to four,” said Muthama.
Muthama, who is also Cord's Management Committee co-chair, said if the government maintains its tough stand over the next three weeks, they would hold protests on a daily basis.
His Siaya counterpart James Orengo urged Cord supporters to maintain peace during the protests.
He also urged police to offer them with security, insisting that the Court had not barred them from holding peaceful demonstrations.
"We will ensure the public behaves in a peaceable manner and are unarmed during the process," said Orengo.
The anti-IEBC protests were held in several other parts of the country including Kisumu, Migori and Nyamira.
One person was shot dead in Kisumu while five others are fighting for their lives at Kisumu County hospital.
