Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has announced that it will resume its weekly anti-IEBC protests on Monday.
Cord Secretariat Cheif Executive Officer Norman Mgaya has said unless there is an intervention, the opposition will hold protests on Monday and Thursday next week.
The opposition side has written to police notifying them of their intention to resume the protests.
This comes after the Jubilee coalition welcomed Cord’s proposal of seven members from each side to discuss the way forward on the IEBC matter.
Jubilee has however disowned Cord’s statement that they agreed on the formation of another four member committee to initiate talks.
Cord leader Raila Odinga in a Thursday evening address said Siaya Senator James Orengo and Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu will meet Jubilee’s two leaders to kick-start talks today (Friday).
Jubilee has agreed that the two Speakers (Justin Muturi and Ekwe Ethuro) should not be involved in the negotiations.
The ruling coalition said the two Speakers should perform their constitutional mandate under the standing orders to ensure that the committee on IEBC acts in accordance with the Standing Orders and the Constitution.
“The Select Committee should operate in accordance with the traditions, practice and norms of Parliament as is set out in the Standing Orders and the Constitution,” Jubilee said in a Thursday Statement.
Cord had earlier proposed that appointees to the joint committee should not be subject to Parliamentary approval.
The opposition also proposed that the negotiation process should not be subjected to standing orders, and the resolutions be tabled in Parliament with no possibility of a negative vote.
Both teams agreed that the business of the Select Committee should be concluded in one month, if not less.
Odinga said the negotiations were ongoing and more developments will be announced Friday evening.
