Cord Co-principals should avoid signing a memorandum of understanding with presidential term limits since it may play an integral role in its disintegration, says Yale University don Dr Crispin Nyamongo.
This comes after Wiper secretary general Hassan Omar was quoted in a local TV saying that Kalonzo Musyoka will serve for one term if he is chosen as the Cord flag bearer and wins 2017 polls.
In an interview on Thursday, Nyamongo said the MoUs were a source of political problems which the country has faced in the recent past and urged the opposition to ‘ease’ their plans.
“Political MoUs have never worked in our country and they are a source of political problems we have been facing. Cord should ease their plans of signing a presidential limit MoU because it will be the genesis of their disintegration in case they win in 2017,” he said.
“We saw what happened between Raila and President Daniel Moi in 2002 and Raila and President Kibaki during the Narc regime. One gets to power and he or she intend stop cling to power leading to political squabbles which are perilous for our economy,” he added.
He urged Cord to work on a common plan of working together rather than risking signing unattainable MoU.
“You recently heard some of the partners complaining of 2013 MoU and I know they will draft another one for 2017 which is likely to against introduce presidential limit to a term. It’s a good idea but it’s a great risk given people like Musyoka and Odinga have a legacy to defend,” said Nyamongo.
“Let them work on a common plan of winning an election by identifying a flag bearer and avoid discussing limits in office whether one or two terms because it will cause problems in future,” he added.
