Armed police and hawked eye officers kept vigil at the IEBC offices at the Anniversary Towers along the University Way.

The tight security saw some of the employees at the Anniversary towers who had no job identification cards denied access to the building.

Security was also streamlined across all corners of Nairobi city stretching up to Kibra, Mathare, Huruma slums and parts of East-lands perceived to be opposition strongholds.

In Kibra, police patrol cars were seen at strategic locations as Cord supporters trickled in numbers to the Anniversary towers where their leaders were expected to forcefully remove IEBC commissioners from office.

Thousands of Cord supporters converged at the Anniversary Towers while chanting anti-IEBC songs.

At 1 pm cord leaders, Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula among others joined the supporters at their attempts to forceful gain entry into Anniversary towers were thwarted by police who had been camping at the offices since 6am.

Police had to use tear gas to disperse the angry supporters who threatened to break the main gate leading to Anniversary Towers in efforts to remove IBEC commissioners form office.

The opposition leaders are pushing for the removal of IEBC commissioners’ led by Chairman Isaac Hassan.

The leaders claim that the electoral commission is being controlled by the Jubilee government.

Prior to the Monday storming of IEBC offices, Cord leaders on Saturday during a rally at Kamukunji grounds had threatened to boycott the 2017 general elections if IEBC will be still in office.

The leaders said that the only way to have free, fair and peaceful 2017 general elections is by removing current IEBC commissioners who they accused of allegedly helping the Jubilee government in the 2013 general elections.
