Political observers have suggested that should talks to field a joint CORD presidential candidate fail, the opposition’s other strategy would be to ensure they all run separately.

The move is set to increase chances of a runoff election under the 50-plus-one rule.

The assumption is that a repeat presidential vote is likely to pit CORD co-principal Raila Odinga against President Uhuru Kenyatta.

It is a prospect that reportedly Uhuru and Ruto are working to avoid by raiding Opposition zones to secure a first-round victory in next year’s polls.

However, nominated MP Johnson Sakaja downplayed the allegations saying that Jubilee is uniting all Kenyans.

"We are selling the Jubilee 'gospel' across the country. Why would anyone want to stay in Opposition? We are opening up to work with everybody irrespective of which side of the political divide they are in," said Sakaja.

Other CORD leaders eyeing the coalition’s ticket in 2017 are Bungoma senator Moses Wetangula and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.
