Ndundori Ward representative Stephen Kihara has urged corporate bodies to create social strategies that include scholarships and bursaries for poor children. Kihara, while addressing parents, teachers and students at Ndundori Secondary School yesterday said many children from poor backgrounds risk dropping out of school or performing poorly because of lack of fees. He challenged local corporate organisations to step in and help children from poor backgrounds pay fees through corporate responsibility programmes that target uplifting education standards in the country. “I am challenging local corporate organizations to help the government in supporting the education needs of poor children. As you can see the government through CDF and Ward Education Fund is trying its best but our corporate bodies should also step in. It cannot cost them a fortune to assist ten or so pupils or students pay fees,” said the MCA. He added that the Wings to Fly education sponsorship programme by Equity Bank was the best example of corporate responsibilities in the country which ought to be emulated by other big organizations in the country. At the same time the MCA urged teachers and parents to cooperate in mentoring of children academically and socially. He observed that lack of cooperation among parents and teachers results in poor mentorship of young people. Kihara added that parents should be free and sincere about the conducts and situation of their children while at the same time teachers should take it as a responsibility to communicate to parents about the conducts and performances of children while in school.
