If you were told to go back to primary school today, would you be willing? I bet you wouldn't, neither would I.
But with the current education CS, maybe you and I would be convinced to go back to school. The CS warning on corporal punishment in schools is something for both parents and children to celebrate!
The reason as to why those especially who went to public schools can't even think to go back there is bad memories they have of the merciless beating they received back then.
Disciplining children is just fine. However some teachers seem to be so thirsty and caning children is the only way to quench their thirst.
If you attended a public school, you must have a clear picture of what am talking about. These teachers who would order you to lie on wet grass in the morning and ruthlessly deal with your "behind", the upper back part of your legs or even worse your soles which are wet and cold after walking for 3-5 km distance without shoes.
If you think of such, then Matiang'i must be the black messiah for Kenyan children.
Sometimes all teachers would line up to cane one pupil. Yes, it did happen back in the days.
If you committed the greatest of sins such as stealing another pupil's food just because you have not had food for some days because your parents had nothing for you, you would "face the music" as they called it.
You would be dealt with like you stole a million shillings. Mind you, no one would care about your hunger- that was purely your business! But coming to think of it rationally, primary pupils are just children and they should be dealt with like children.
Simple punishments will still work for them and beating them up like donkeys only instills fear in them and makes hate school.
We do not want a nation where children drop out of school due to corporal punishment.
We want them to learn and enjoy learning. Yet, they can't enjoy learning if they can't even put up their arm to ask a question in class for they fear to be caned.
