The senior citizens cited corruption as the major impediment that has rocked the exercise with some of them not receiving their monthly stipend as directed by the government.

“We would like to know how this exercise is carried out to ensure transparency. The chief, sub-chief or local administration should clear the air to us so that we can know how these funds are intended to reach those it is meant to,” James Mwangi said.

The funds which are disbursed monthly to benefit those above 65 years have not been well administered according to Mwangi, due to what he termed as misappropriation by some officials.

“Some of the elderly have been wondering why in the first place they had to register their names yet they have not received anything since the inception of the program more than two years ago. Some have died including my father without receiving anything. We need to know the truth behind this. We want the national government to intervene on this,” he added.

“I only received the money during the first few months after the program started. After that, I have been waiting, in vain. The problem may be with those mandated to disburse them to us which we are calling on the government to act on,” Julia Wangeci, a senior citizen said.
