The Senator for Kisumu County Anyang' Nyong'o has accused county governments of fanning corruption at their county level governments.
According to Anyang' Nyong'o, the county governments were handling issues in a skewed manner guided by corrupt dealings.
The senator made the remarks when he chaired the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee (PAIC) on Monday which met with Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua to shed light on the accountability of Machakos County government.
Senator Anyang' Nyong'o cited an example where contractors and suppliers were asked to pay a certain amount to county officials before being rightfully given their dues. The Kisumu Senator called on all county governments to deal with corruption at their level before accusing the national government of being corrupt.
"The main hub of corruption is in the county government. Many procurement dealings are got from corrupt dealings and one has to pay county officials before being paid his or her rightful dues," he said.
"This should stop and all county governments should pay all pending bills to allow the contractors and suppliers continue with their normal businesses. Delays in such payments only serves as an avenue of corruption as many people will want a share of the money from the top county officials to other unscrupulous people," added Nyong'o.
Machakos County government was accused of failing to pay pending bills amounting to over Sh 700m owed to contractors and suppliers.
However, in his defense, Machakos county Governor Dr Alfred Mutua said that his county government was working on remitting the payments to the contractors and suppliers.
Mutua further stated that some of the pending bills were due to unfinished works and undelivered goods by both the contractors and suppliers.
Mutua further stated that his government was not going to pay for any unfinished works by contractors or undelivered goods by suppliers.
