Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka has said that corruption is the root cause of children from poor families being denied a chance to join the police force.
Onyonka noted that despite recruitment exercise being declared as corruption-free by the government, there are some people who infiltrate the exercise making it difficulty for the less-fortunate to get recruited to the police force.
Speaking in Kisii during the launch of the Kisii County Flag at Gusii stadium by Kisii Governor James Ongwae, the lawmaker urged police recruitment officers to allow all those who qualify to compete favourably for the available slots allocated to each region.
"It is worrying that corruption has infiltrated every sector of our country including police recruitment thus locking out qualified children from poor families from joining the police force on the basis of failure to raise a bribe,” he said.
The legislator, however, commended the government for increasing the number of recruitment slots allocated to various sub-counties as it opened up opportunities for regions that formerly lost out on the exercise.
"I take this opportunity to thank the government for its move to increase the number of slots allocated to various sub-counties signalling a positive trend in police recruitment exercise,” observed Onyonka.
