Time to time I hear of corruption cases and read through news papers. To me it seems corruption has emerged the best way Kenyans and their leaders should earn their living. Corruption started as a small thing but today, leaders have been reported stealing huge amounts of public money and leaving the less fortunate to suffer with huge daily taxes.
It sounds bad that people engage in corruption despite the campaigns that it is illegal and punishable by law. So far no one has been jailed for committing a corruption offence. Concerned authorities in Kenya are comfortable with it. Walk on roads and see how police officers harass and demand bribes from matatu operators.
Officers in big offices ask for bribes before they employ someone. Others will not hire a person if he is not from a particular family, tribe, religion, race and such. Offices have emerged to be the best corruption zone. It seems the constitution is of no help.
Even the dumbest person will tell you without doubt that the levels of corruption in the country have gone up. After politics, most of the stories revolving in the media today are about corruption. If not someone stealing something small, it is that someone has stolen something big, and that is the order of the day.
To me corruption is greed. Leaders have grabbed land, stolen CDF money and gone into hiding with NYS money. What is that if not sheer greed? Most of them are people languishing in great wealth but they still have a mind to grab something extra.
When the KDF recruitment is done, the government gives false threats that whoever involved in corruption will be arrested and charged in a court of law in court. But fact remains that the recruits pay in order to be recruited, everybody is aware, and nobody dares stop it. Some pay as much as Sh300 000 to only join the Administration Police.
SUGGESTION
We'd better embrace corruption as our means of living. Otherwise, we shall all lag behind as the dirty society moves ahead to step on our heads.
