According to the union, Members of Parliament from Western have been adamant in pushing for the State ban sugar imports.

Speaking on behalf of the union, Deputy Secretary General Benson Okwaro said the current trade imbalances being witnessed in the nation have negatively affected sugar production in various parts of the country.

Okwaro said most leaders from Western have concentrated on issues that lack importance yet the collapse of Mumias Sugar will severely impoverish residents of the region if action is not taken.

"The influx of imported sugar is affecting the sale of local sugar leading to losses for companies," he said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by the Star.

"Unless the government comes out forcefully to stop illegal sugar imports from flooding our local market, the collapse of the sugar industry, which is imminent, will result in massive job losses in the sector."
