Kenyan workers will demand for manifestos from politicians as the country heads to the elections in 2017.
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) executive board member Francis Wangara said politicians must tell workers what they intend to do for them while in office.
Wangara said COTU will engage both the ruling coalition and the opposition before elections.
“We will have to take stock of what the current government has done to workers, what the opposition has done to us. What do they intend to do to us, we must ask these hard questions,” he said.
He said workers are concerned that their issues always remain unattended to by politicians they vote in office.
Speaking in Kisumu at Tom Mboya Labour College on Monday when he opened a meeting for African young trade unionists, Wangara said in most cases politicians come up with friendly manifestoes towards workers welfare without any implementation.
He said they will actively engage politicians on what they have on the table for workers in the country.
Wangara noted that workers will vet the manifestoes and cast their votes based on what they feel will improve on their welfares.
“Workers will vote wisely this time round, every worker will have a reason as to why he or she is voting for a particular leader,” he said.
