The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has denied reports that the union will support Jubilee Party in the 2017 general election.
According to the Union Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the organisation amended its Constitution in 2001 to delink itself from associating itself with any political party.
“The decision by the then governing council still stands because our members belong to different political parties," said Atwoli.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, he said for the sake of democracy and unity in the umbrella workers’ union, individual members support political parties in their own capacity.
"It will be dictatorial for me, without the mandate of members, to declare Cotu will support a certain party,” he added.
Atwoli was reacting to remarks made recently by the 6,000 strong Dock Workers Union (DWU) secretary general Simon Sang that the union will back Jubilee Party in August 2017 polls.
