According to the COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the new rates that shall see remittances rise by 50 percent to Sh150 has already been gazetted and workers have no option but to comply.

The new rates as announced by the Central Organization of Trade Unions is meant to run its activities following claims that the current remittances never fully covered all the expenses arising from the running of the union activities.

The increase is now expected to be particularly painful to a larger fraction of the working class individuals, who have been remitting Sh100 for the last seven years.

Atwoli says his organisation has been struggling to fund many of their activities which include paying of hired lawyers who represent their affiliate workers, opening of academic institutions to train labour officers among others.

The new rates was agreed upon following a consultative meeting with labour unions affiliated to COTU in earlier this year.
