Government spokesperson Erick Kiraithe has dismissed media reports indicating that the government intends to ban mass action and protest after announcement of the election results during the August polls.
In a media briefing on Wednesday in Nairobi, Kiraithe said the issue was misreported and facts misrepresented by the media, clarifying that the government only banned mass violence and not mass action.
“There is a big difference betweendemonstration, picketing, protest and mass violence," he stated.
“Nobody has criminalised mass action but we are just preparing for people who will commit crime in the name of mass action,” he added.
In a document seen my the media on Monday, security agencies had resolved to criminalise incitement, zoning of regions as strongholds to certain political parties and politicians, participating in organised gangs to harass politicians among other key measures.
The Opposition has since cautioned the government against outlawing mass action, stating that it is a breach of the constitution.
