Deputy President William Ruto has positioned himself as one of the top contenders for the 2022 presidential race after President Uhuru Kenyatta's term expires.
DP Ruto will be expected to select a running mate who will be his deputy in case he wins the presidential contest.
Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichungwah could be among the people the DP may settle on when selecting his number two.
Over the past few months, Ichungwah has emerged as a key ally of Ruto and a strong supporter of the DP's 2022 ambitions.
The vocal MP has on many occasions attended several functions with the Deputy President and also defended him against a section of Central Kenya leaders.
Last year during the Presidential debate, Ruto never showed up but instead sent the vocal legislator to represent him at the event. This was one of the biggest hints that the DP may pick the Kikuyu lawmaker as his running mate.
In the past months, a section of central Kenya leaders noted that Ruto was not assured of their support in the next polls, a thing that Ichungwa dismissed stating that the entire region will rally behind Ruto.
Could it be that the DP is grooming Ichungwah for the 2022 race? Only time will tell. One important thing to note is that the legislator should not be underestimated.
