The Kisii and Nyamira Development Councils are calling for better management of the education sector in the counties to reduce cases of exam cheating.
According to officials and members of Abagusii Culture and Development Council led by their chairperson James Matundura, the alleged stigmatisation of the local community over alleged cheating in last year’s KCSE examination should not be condoned.
The officials who stormed into both County education officials and education director's offices called on the officials to explain why the county’s performing in terms of education is on a drop.
“We feel bad and embarrassed when Kisii stands as the leading county in examination cheating with more than three schools’ results cancelled,” said Matundura.
Matundura also defended the council’s involvement in the issue saying as the community’s supreme advisory organ, they are justified to fight for the community’s rights.
The chairman announced the council’s decision to stage demonstrations and move to court if the affected candidates’ plights were not addressed in the shortest time possible.
Addressing the officials, Deputy Governor Dr Joash Maangi said the council was right to be involved in the issue since over 500 candidates affected hailed from the community.
Maangi said the matter had far reaching consequences as the community would have fewer students in universities than in previous years.
