Detectives from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority on Tuesday impounded counterfeit chewing gum worth millions of shillings in Mombasa.

The chewing gum was seized at the Sweet R Us manufacturing factory in Majengo area. According to the Star, the officers raided the area following a tip off from members of the public.Confirming the incident, Mombasa County Anti-Counterfeit Authority head Ibrahim Bule said they had received several complainants from residents over the factory’s products. Bule also said the products are similar to those manufactured by the Coca Cola Company, which have been confusing buyers. He further said the detectives are probing whether the manufacturer is licensed to operate within the area as well as manufacture the products in question. "We will also investigate whether they pay taxes," he added, as quoted by the daily. The samples were taken to the government laboratory to test whether they are fit for human consumption."Sweets and chewing gums are mostly consumed by children therefore we will like to ascertain if they do not have any side effects," Bule said.
