Garissa County is among eight counties that are set to benefit from a joint donor kitty towards infrastructure projects.
The funds will be used to improve infrastructure and universal health services in counties in the arid and semi-arid areas.
United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator Siddharth Chatterjee said the projects will assist residents in marginalized counties to get better health services and improved infrastructure projects including road network and energy.
“I am pleased to find a committed to improving maternal mortality rate and child health in the counties and I want to assure and commit our support for this course,” said Mr. Chatterjee.
Under the umbrella of the Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), a consortium of UN agencies, the World Bank, and the national government will fund the projects.
The other counties forming the FCDC bloc include Mandera, Turkana, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Tana River and Lamu.
Mandera County Governor Ali Roba who welcomed the initiative said lives in the region will be improved by the support of key infrastructure projects.
Mr. Roba who is chairing the ASAL committee in the Council of Governors urged more investments in the region saying security matters caused by Al-Shabaab militants have been addressed.
Speaking in Mandera County during a tour by a team of twelve envoys, Mr. Roba said Mandera was peaceful citing security fencing along Kenya Somalia border as a milestone.
“We are pleased to welcome the biggest delegation of envoys in Mandera since independence. It is an endorsement of changing times and the need to work with development partners to better lives and infrastructure.”
“Security fencing of the borderline has allowed life to return to normal and reduce the terror attacks which has increased investment opportunities in Mandera,” he said.
