Election observers have warned the country that there might be violence during or after the next general elections, which is a few weeks away.

The head of European Union election observers to Kenya Marietje Shaake said that several quarters harbor concerns of possible outbreak.

“Kenyans are concerned about this. The security and safety of the eelctions depends on many agencies,” said Schaake.

Speaking at the Sarova Stanley Hotel on Monday, Shaake did not however specify the areas likely to witness chaos, but said the body will present its findings soon.

“We cannot go into all that now and do not want to jump to conclusion,” she added.

The Kenya National Commission Human Rights has picked out spots that might experience violence, flagging Kitui, Machakos and Busia as possible hotspots.

Other regions that have been earmarked by the commission include Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Narok, Kericho, Kisii, Homa Bay, Isiolo, Turkana, Bungoma, Kiambu, Kilifi, Lamu, MIgori, Baringo and West Pokot.

Ms Shaake however added that there are key issues that her group is trying to figure out, including the polls legal framework, voter registration and the media.

“The mission will look at the reality across the country and make recommendations on how to improve future elections,” she said.

There are 30 long term observers in the country, with an additional 32 deployed on short term.
