After four weeks of accusations and counter accusations regarding the construction of the first public university in Nyamira in Kiabonyoru area, concerns of Nyaronge residents seem to have been heard after a senior representative revealed about a possible teachers training college. Residents of Nyaronge had accused the county leadership of failing to establish the university in the region due to existence of huge tracks of land belonging to the national government. But on Tuesday, Gesima ward representative Ken Atuti revealed that plans were in place to start a teachers training college in the region which would later be turned into an institution of higher learning. “I was also of the opinion we establish the university in Nyaronge but majority of the MCAs voted for Kiabonyoru. However, I have been pursuing the issue in the governor’s office and certainly he has agreed to write a proposal to the Ministry of Education for a teachers college,” he said. Mr Atuti asked area residents to remain calm as he pursued the matter, besides promising to ensure the new university opened a branch of agriculture in the region due to existence of many farming activities. “All they have to do is to give us time to fix everything. I have already written to organisers to immediately open a school of agriculture in the region due to favourable conditions after the university starts operating,” he added. Nyamira County government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the University of Eldoret and the institution will be in operation in about a year’s time.
