Two Mombasa city inspectorate officers were on Tuesday arraigned in court to answer to charges of receiving a bribe.

Alfred Ochieng and Fatuma Ali were accused of receiving a Sh3,000 bribe to release pedestrians arrested for disobeying traffic rules.The prosecution told the court that the two county askaris arrested Mr Olga Odoury and Ms Ruth Akinyi for flouting traffic rules on August 25, 2016 in Nyali.The court heard that the two officers received the bribe from Mr Kennedy Waningu to free Odoury and Akinyi who were arrested for risking their lives by crossing a busy road. According to Baraka FM, the two officers were arrested on Monday by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges before Mombasa Senior Principle Magistrate Henry Nyakweba.Magistrate Nyakweba ordered the accused to be released on a surety bond of Sh50, 000 or a cash bail of Sh20,000 each.The case will be mentioned on July 31.
