Former Nakuru County council chairman John Mungu has called on the county government to put in place measures that will create job opportunities for the young people.
Speaking at Naivasha town, Mungu said that the high crime rate in the county is a result of lack of jobs for the youth. The former chairman stated that most youths in the county despite having gone to school have no jobs.
“The situation is serious and there is need for the government to move quickly and address unemployment,” he said.
He also said that the future of this country is blink if measures are not taken to create jobs for many unemployed young people.
The chairman also called for mentorship of young people noting that most of the have no people to counsel and provide direction for them.
He however lauded the initiatives being taken by the national government to empower youths and women. Mungu stated that the Uwezo Fund set aside for women, youths and persons with disability will go a long way in improving their socio-economic development.
He also urged the county government to implement laws that will safeguard the welfare of sand harvesters.
Mungu indicated that the county has no laws on sand harvesting, a situation that has led to death and manipulation of sand harvesters especially in Naivasha.
On Wednesday, eight people perished in Maai Mahiu after the lorry carrying sand overturned at Kigecha along the Maai Mahiu-Narok road.
Mungu said that the deaths could have been prevented if there were appropriate laws to guide the sand harvesting sector.
He said those killed were members of a youth group who were working hard to earn a descent livelihood.
