Nakuru county government has been asked to supply farmers with planting materials ahead of the planting season.
Addressing locals at Molo town on Wednesday, area MP Joseph Kiuna said the county has enough resources that should be provided to farmers.
He intimated that most farmers have no access to planting materials due to the high market prices.
“I want to ask the county government to help Molo farmers’ access cheap and reliable planting materials,” he said.
The MP urged farmers in the region to use certified seeds for proper yields.
He said that many diseases and pests that attack crops are often brought about by fake seeds.
“Farmers should use certified seeds if they want to have good harvests,” said the MP.
The MP has on the same note urged the county government to fully implement the potato packaging rule.
He said that the rules will protect farmers from being exploited by middlemen and cartels.
The rule requires that potatoes be packaged in 50 Kilogram’s bags only. Kiuna pledged to spearhead polices that will boost farming in the region.
