Young athletes in Uasin Gishu who get sponsorship to study abroad might soon get financial support from the county government.
This is after a nominated Member of Uasin Gishu County Assembly revealed plans to set up a fund to support upcoming athletes.
Speaking at Annex in the outskirts of Eldoret town on Wednesday during the time-trial for athletes seeking scholarships to study in the United States, the nominated MCA Boroswa Mary Goretti, said many athletes have in the past failed to take up opportunities for lack of ticket funds.
"As an Assembly, we'll look for ways of setting up a kitty to support athletes going abroad by either paying for their passport fees or air tickets," noted Mrs. Giretti.
"I've talked to coaches here who have told me that some of the athletes already have Visa to travel to the US but can't afford air tickets and this has a been a problem that many parents face," she added.
The MCA further reiterated the need for the county government to put in place appropriate mechanisms that will help nurture young talents especially the athletes.
Uasin Gishu together with neighboring Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties are known for producing world-class athletes that fly the country's flag high on the global sports platform.
