The move follows reports of a cholera outbreak in the area a month ago.

According to Naivasha sub-county Fisheries officer Nicholas Kagundu, the ban has been effected since most of the hawkers are not licensed.

“All those who are in the business are required to have a licence from the county government but none of them has and in the light of cholera outbreaks in the area, we have banned fish hawking for those who lack the permits,” he said Tuesday when contacted over the matter.

Kagundu further clarified that the county government was not against the trade that has employed scores of people, a majority of them youth.

He said : “if they comply with all the regulations set, we do not have a problem with them doing their business as long as they are doing it within what we have set as a county government.”

The county government will take action against anyone found to conduct the trade without permits.
