The county government of Nakuru has been blamed for the rising fish poaching and encroachment in Lake Naivasha.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Lake Naivasha Management Committee chairperson David Ndirangu lamented over the increase in illegal fishing at the lake.
He said that rise in fish poaching is due to poor legislation and penalties against the poachers.
The official indicated that the current penalties are too lenient and continue to encourage poaching.
Mr Ndirangu observed that there is need for proper legislation to curb the menace which he said will hamper the sub-county economic development.
“The county government is partly to blame for the rising poaching at Lake Naivasha,” he said, adding that the move by the county to lift fishing ban that is normally observed in the area has contributed to the problem.
Mr Ndirangu also accused the county government of taking too long to legislate appropriate laws that will safeguard the lake. He said the lake is under risk if appropriate conservation measures are not taken to curb poaching and pollution.
