A group of business people from Kisumu City led by Ms Elizabeth Kaathi said that informal settlements have a great potential to support the economy of the county.

Kaathi said that the high population in the informal settlements can play a major role in the growth of Kisumu's economy if they are provided with the right conditions.

"Roads are a major component in the growth of any economy, for a long time informal settlements have been ignored as they are considered poor, but that should not be the case," said Kaathi.

Kaathi who is a hotelier said that residents of Obunga, Nyawtta and Manyatta do not feel as part of the Kisumu City community as they do not have access to good roads.

"The moment a section of the society feels that it is being neglected then their input to the growth of the economy will be lower, and that is the case of areas such as Obunga.

She appealed to Kisumu governor Jack Ranguma to ensure that before his first term in office ends, better roads should be connecting the entire of Kisumu City.
