The Kisumu County Assembly has been challenged to increase monetary allocations for water and sanitation projects.
Sustainable Aid in Africa (SANA) International Organisation in Kisumu Team Leader Alfred Adongo said with the county governments now in place, it is the duty of the county assembly to allocate enough money during budgetary estimates towards ensuring that residents of Kisumu county access clean water, alongside better sanitation facilities.
“We have around 14 key sectors in Kisumu County. Unfortunately during budgetary allocations, water and sanitation sector’s allocation comes a distant tenth,” said Adongo.
He said through interactions with most residents of Kisumu County, water and sanitation should be among the top three in terms of monetary allocation.
Adongo said that whereas more money is allocated to fund education projects, less that 30 per cent of learning institutions in Kisumu County have access to clean water.
He was speaking on Tuesday at the Kasagam during an event to mark this year’s World Water Day.
According to the Kisumu County budget estimates for the fiscal year 2014/2015, governance and administration department was allocated Sh473,434,064, while the water, energy and natural resources department was allocated Sh224,346,406.
