The move was reached at after some remains were accidentally exhumed during a grave digging exercise following the diminishing space for accommodating more bodies.

Speaking on Tuesday at the grounds, Nakuru County Health executive member Dr Kabii Mungai said that the cemetery could no longer be used as it is running out of space.

“Anyone who is seeking burial grounds for their loved ones will be forced to inter them at Nakuru South cemetery or alternatively in Rongai,” Mungai said.

“The county government is working on identifying additional land for expansion of the cemetery but this one remains closed till further notice. We only have a space for 20 more bodies but they are all booked.”

He also said that the county government is in talks with the relevant persons to try to acquire more burial grounds at the Hindu crematorium that borders the North cemetery.

Residents are, however, pleading with the county government to expedite plans to acquire more vast land to be used as the new burial grounds.

"We are urging the governor to handle this issue as an emergency since it poses a health risk," Aida Makena, a resident, said.

"We have even other families that come from as far as Subukia to bury their loved ones here thus the need to have more accommodative and larger land for cemetery," Makena added.
